Evaluating the impact of government transparency, corruption, and effectiveness on public trust: implications for citizen collaboration and government support

Abstract: Although research on the relationships between public trust in government and the likelihood of accountable and efficient government is common in many countries, empirical research in this nature is rare in the Thai context. This study helps fill this gap by evaluating how government’s effectiveness and transparency and the level of corruption affect public trust. Using a mixed method, the study collected data by surveying 350 students from three Thai universities and interviewing 17 key informants. Overall, the study’s findings underscore the necessity of transparent, accountable, and effective governance in building and maintaining public trust. The findings reveal that transparency significantly fosters trust, while corruption undermines public confidence and reduces public participation. Government effectiveness plays a vital role in building trust, which leads to increased civic engagement and acceptance of policies. The findings highlight the importance of policy consistency, crisis management, and youth involvement and how these factors can greatly shape trust levels. To enhance citizen collaboration and support for government, the study recommends that government enhance transparency through real-time data access, strengthen anti-corruption measures, ensure policy stability, and utilize digital governance to improve service delivery and citizen participation. Future research should explore digital governance, demographic differences in trust, and the long-term effects of public participation on government legitimacy.
