Abstract:
Home Economics education equips learners with academic and professional knowledge through experiential learning. To ensure effective teaching, Home Economics teachers must develop key competencies aligned with the teacher development guidelines of the Office of the Basic Education Commission. This study is both a research and development, with the objectives of: 1) studying the competencies of Home Economics teachers the Occupations Department under the Office of the Basic Education Commission; 2) creating a model and a manual for using the competency model of Home Economics teachers the Occupations Department under the Office of the Basic Education Commission; 3) testing the model and the manual for using the competency model of Home Economics teachers the Occupations Department under the Office of the Basic Education Commission. The study involved 177 Home Economics teachers from schools under the Bangkok
Metropolitan Secondary Educational Service Area Office. Additionally, 15 experts participated in in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, while 30 teachers were selected for model and manual testing. Research instruments consisted of competency assessments, interview forms, discussion records, skill evaluations, pre- and post-training self-assessments, and training satisfaction evaluations. Data were collected through inquiry, in- depth interviews, focus group discussion, and the trial implementation of the competency model and its manual. Statistical analyses included mean, standard deviation, need analysis (PNI Modified), content analysis, and one-sample t-test.
Research results found that: 1) Competencies of Home Economics teachers had 2 aspects, namely 11 core competencies, where exchange of opinions and building network on Home Economics had the highest average value (PNI Modified = 0.402); there were 12 competencies for the line of work, and the use and development of innovative technological media for learning administration in the field of Home Economics had the highest average value (PNI Modified = 0.348). Developing competencies of Home Economics teacher were important and affect the efficiency of work operation, categorized into 3 aspects: knowledge, skills, and attributes. Developing these competencies was crucial for improving teaching efficiency. Recommended methods included knowledge sharing and study tours during school breaks. Performance evaluation should involve communication, supervision, monitoring, and self-assessment, along with stakeholder reviews. 2) The Home Economics teacher competency model consists of seven aspects, represented by the acronym T E A C H E R, which includes: T (Theory) or concept and theory used; E (End Goal) or objective for developing competencies of Home Economics teachers; A (Assets) or supporting factors; C (Construct) or development process; H (How To) or methods used for developing; E (Effect) or results obtained from developing Home Economics teacher competencies; and R (Refine) or continuous development. The manual for using the model of Home Economics teacher competencies was divided into 4 chapters: Introduction, Competency Development Model for Home Economics teachers, Training Curriculum for Home Economics Teacher Competencies, and Conclusion. 3) The results of the trial usage of the model and manual on using the Home Economics teachers competency model found that the post training assessment was higher than the criteria by 70 percent, at the statistically significant level of .01 with an average score of 17.23 points, which is 86.13 percent. Home Economics teachers pre-training self-evaluation was at a moderate level, while post-training self-evaluation was at the highest level, teacher satisfaction with the training was also at the highest level. This research recommends that Home Economics teachers integrate innovative media and technology into learning management, develop a curriculum for teacher development in the Occupations Department, apply research-based curriculum findings, and undergo specialized training in Home Economics skills.
