Abstract:
Microplastics (MPs) debris is a global concern at present. The Chao Phraya River is one of
the principal ways of pollution from terrestrial to ocean in Thailand, especially microplastics. In this study,
MPs were collected in water and sediment during March 2021, September 2021, and March 2022 along five
provinces of the Chao Phraya River. Hydrological data were also collected to estimate the flux of MPs
between provinces. The size, shape, color, and polymer of microplastics were observed. Sedimentation data
were collected in both sediment and microplastics. Results showed MPs were found in all sample sites with
average abundance in all provinces from water samples ranging from 0.54±0.05 to 1.07±0.28 items/L, while
in sediment samples ranged from 183.84±38.76 to 546.18±86.84 items/kg in dry weight, all season
considered. The overall contamination and accumulation were found to be similar between provinces but
found significantly different between seasons. The size of MPs in water varied and shifted dominance
between seasons but MPs in sediment were mostly found in 330 to 5,000 µm (Kruskal Wallis, P<0.05).
Fibers were mostly found in all sampling sites (Kruskal Wallis, P<0.05). Most of MPs colors were blue
(Kruskal Wallis, P<0.05). The highest composition of MPs polymer was found as polyethylene terephthalate
(Kruskal Wallis, P<0.05). Sedimentation of MPs was found different between seasons (P<0.05). The flux of
microplastics between provinces showed microplastics flowed out from Samut Prakan provinces in
September 2021 and Bangkok in March 2022 about 1.83 and 2.00 hundred thousand million items per day
respectively. The results also showed the number of microplastics transferred from land into rivers was
found highest amount at Samut Prakan Province in September 2021 about 1.61 hundred thousand million
items per day while in Nonthaburi Province found the highest amount in March 2022 about 1.21 hundred
thousand million items per day. The result indicates that the main microplastic sources of the Chao Phraya
River during the wet and dry seasons were Samut Prakan Province and Nonthaburi provinces, respectively
