Abstract:
The aim of this study was to find out antagonistic bacteria for proposing tomato bacterial wilt disease management. About 12 isolates (Chp1, Chp2, Chp3, Chp4, Chp5, Chp6, Chp7, Chp8, Chp9, Chp10, Chp11, and Chp12) from chili rhizosphere were tested for their abilities to inhibit growth of Ralstonia solanacearum causing of tomato bacterial wilt. The result revealed that 7 isolates (Chp3, Chp6, Chp7, Chp8, Chp9, Chp10 and Chp12) from chili rhizosphere showed in vitro antagonism. However, 8 antagonistic bacteria (a2-1, a2-2, a2-3, a2-4, a2-5, a2-6, a2-7 and a2-8) from previous study have shown high potential of antagonistic activity against the pathogen more than the 7 isolates from chili rhizosphere. The 8 antagonistic bacteria were selected for the biocontrol efficacy and plant growth promotion activities in greenhouse test. It was found that all isolates were effective in inhibiting the disease or reducing its severity. The isolate a2-5 are the most effective. It was shown that isolates a2-1, a2-5, a2-7 and a2-8 were highly effective in controlling the disease with an average survival percentage more than 80 percent. In greenhouse, the reduction of disease incidence of tomato bacterial wilt was recorded in treated tomato plants with the 8 antagonistic bacteria, which also increased plant growth compared with non-treated control. In addition, when using antagonistic bacteria in combination with R. solanacearum, it was found that all 8 antagonistic bacteria had a significant effect on plant root length, compared to the process of pouring R. solanacearum alone. The result revealed that a2-1 isolate gave the largest average root length of 27.67 cm. Therefore, these results suggest that the 8 antagonistic bacteria may be used to control bacterial wilt disease and promote the growth of cherry tomatoes on the farm
