Abstract:
Climate change impacts and adaptation were evaluated on the rainfed Hom Mali rice cultivation in Northeast, Thailand (Lam Siao basin with drainage area of 4,400 km²) using SWAT+ model. The daily projected 30-year (20212050) climate datasets (rainfall, minimum and maximum temperature) were selected from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP): 2 scenarios from the 5th phase (CMIP5-RCP4.5, CMIP5-RCP8.5) and CMIP6-SSP5- 8.5 scenario from the 6th phase. In total of 9 datasets were compiled (3 GCMs for each scenario). Simulation outputs were analyzed and compared with those from the baseline climate period (19812010) by scenario groups combined using the multi-model ensemble technique. The projected climate datasets revealed that temperature increased by 1.2°C and rainfall increased by 4% compared with the baseline period (1,310 mm). Temperature rises in dry season (NovemberApril) were higher than in rainy season (May-October), whereas rainfall increased in rainy season with considerable depth in mid-season (JuneAugust). The water balance analysis indicated runoff and percolation increased but evapotranspiration decreased. Runoff and percolation change patterns were agreed with the rainfall changes. The remarkable ET reduction in dry season was due to more soil moisture deficit. The projected rice yield decreased by 1.8% compared with the baseline period (2,304 kg/ha) and had more variability. Shifting planting date from typical period in July, an adaptation solution, was tested using simulation model. It was found that early planting date in June provided higher yield by 22% and less variability. To confront the present and future climate-related risks, it is immediately required to improve preparedness efforts, to establish prevention and mitigation measures, and to develop adaptation solutions
