Abstract:
The objectives of this research were to 1) find the relationship between the directly measured soil moisture, soil moisture obtained from SMAP satellites and the soil salinityvariability in salt affected soil areas, and 2) apply soil moisture values to assess soil salinity in the field using the moisture data obtained from SMAP. The study was conducted at Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen Campus, where 4 study sites that were markedly affected by salt were chosen. The soil samples at each study site were collected at a depth of 0 10 cm in triplicate, every 7 days, between November 2022 and February 2023, for a total of 16 times. The results showed that the directly obtained soil moisture values ranged from 6.04 to 27.94% and the soil moisture obtained from the SMAP satellite ranged from 19.95 to 32.31%. The moisture values varied according to the amount of rainfall in the study areas. The electrical conductivity values were in the range of 30.3 to 125.7 dS/m, indicating that during the study period, all 4 study areas had salinity values exceeding the standard values, which can be classified as salt affected soils. When the soil moisture value increased, the electrical conductivity value decreased. Thus, in the linear equation, the directly obtained soil moisture value correlated negatively with the electrical conductivity value, with a value of R² (P < 0.01) as follows: 0.477 (Point 1), 0.735 (Point 2), 0.682 (Point 3), and 0.856 (Point 4). The soil moisture values obtained from the SMAP satellite also correlated negatively with the electrical conductivity, with a value of R² (P < 0.01) as follows: 0.878 (Point 1), 0.822 (Point 2), 0.620 (Point 3), and 0.747 (Point 4). These findings indicate that soil moisture data from SMAP satellites can be used instead of moisture data obtained directly from soil sampling in the field.
