Abstract:
This research aims to critique Bronwyn Finnigans ideas in 'The Buddha's Lucky Throw and Pascal's Wager'. The study primarily examines documents related to these works, employing philosophical argumentation as its methodology. Finnigan (Finnigan, 2024, pp. 561-580),presents six key ideas: (1) The Buddha and Pascal used the same type of reasoning in their respective wagers, such as dominance reasoning, a point with which the researcher agrees. (2) The Buddhas wager predates Pascals and appears in two forms: argument from dominance and argument from strong dominance. While the researcher concurs, they contest Finnigans claim that the Buddha does not reference infinite value, as the Apannaka Sutta mentions Nirvana, which can be regarded as infinite value in Buddhism. (3) There is no evidence for karma and rebirth. However, the researcherdisagrees, arguing that case studies of individuals who report past-life memories may constitute such evidence, and that, in some instances, truth and evidence need not necessarily coincide. (4) The wager in the Apannaka Suttacontradicts the Kalama Sutta, as it lacks proof that can be personally verified through meditation. The researcher refutes this, arguing that in some cases, self-knowledge can be realized through mental discernment. (5) The principle of anattais inconsistent with reincarnation. However, the researcherdisagree, arguing that the process of death and rebirth of the five aggregates can be coherently explained through the principles of the three characteristics, the law of dhamma continuity, and dependent origination. (6) The wager in the Apannaka Suttais deemed unreasonable for three reasons: (6.1) It is unreasonable if the concepts of karma and rebirth in other religions are not considered. The researcher disagrees, as the Buddha had already categorized all existing worldviews into two groups from the outset: right view and wrong view. (6.2) It is unreasonable to assume that belief in karma and reincarnation necessarily leads to moral behavior. The researcherdisagrees with this assumption and counters it by referencing empirical studies on belief in heaven and hell, as well as research on the effectiveness of graphic warning labels on cigarette packaging.Similarly, those who reject karma and rebirth may engage in immoral actions. (6.3) Those who deny karma and rebirth can still act ethically for other reasons. While this is possible, the researcher maintains that moral choices are primarily influence by whether individuals recognize the harm in unwholesome mental states and the benefits of wholesome ones
