Abstract:
This research aimed to study and evaluate the potential of using spent mushroom substrate, which is an agricultural byproduct, ensiled with wholeplant corn on nutrient composition, bioactive compounds, in vitro true digestibility, rumen fermentation, rumen microbial population and enteric methane production by in vitro technique. Five dietary treatments with three replicates were assigned in completely randomized design (CRD), which included 1) wholeplant corn silage; CS 2) corn ensiled with spent mushroom substrate of Pleurotus ostreatus; SMSPO 3) corn ensiled with spent mushroom substrate of Pleurotus djamor; SMSPD) 4) corn ensiled with spent mushroom substrate ofLentinus squarrosulus Mont; SMSLS and 5) corn ensiled with spent mushroom substrate ofLentinus polychrous Lév; SMSLP in the ratio 1 to 1 on dry matter basis. The results showed that the chemical composition evaluation of NDF, ADF and ADL of the treatments significantly increased from the control (P<0.05). Volatile fatty acids and ammonia nitrogen of treatments were not different from the control (P>0.05). Enteric methane production and methanogen population of treatments tended to decrease. In conclusion, the usage of four types spent mushroom substrates had no negative effect on rumen fermentation and rumen ecology. They can be used as reserve animal feed sources and alternative roughage for ruminants to reduce methane production in rumen
