Abstract:
This classroom action research aimed to enhance students' design thinking skills and explore instructional strategies grounded in STEM education. The study involved 49 Grade 10 students from a demonstration school in Bangkok, under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. Research instruments included three instructional plans, design thinking assessment worksheets, and post-instructional reflection logs. Findings indicated progressive improvement in students' design thinking across components: empathizing, problem analysis, ideation, prototyping, and testing. Notably, significant gains were observed in problem understanding and prototyping, with average scores reaching 3 in the third instructional planthe highest level. Other components also showed consistent enhancement, with most students achieving average scores of 3. The study identified effective instructional practices (1) employing challenging, real-life learning scenarios (2) utilizing contextually relevant learning materials (3) posing analytical questions to identify problem conditions (4) fostering group collaboration and joint research (5) designing products using design software (6) applying open-ended questions aligned with Bloom's Taxonomy (7) providing opportunities for testing and reflection (8) offering constructive, positively reinforcing feedback and (9) encouraging communication and reflection through product presentations. These findings suggest that STEM-based instructional approaches effectively promote students' design thinking skills
