This study aimed to investigate the questioning practices of novice teachers during the implementation of the 5E instructional model to promote higher-order thinking competencies among Grade 3 students in a small opportunity-expanded school in Phrae Province, Thailand. The focus was on three core cognitive competencies: creative thinking, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Data were collected through classroom video recordings and analyzed using discourse analysis and teacher reflection. The findings revealed that novice teachers employed both effective and challenging types of questions in promoting higher-order thinking. In the domain of creative thinking, teachers posed contextually relevant questions that connected to students experiences, encouraged diverse perspectives, and supported real-world application of knowledge. However, some questions remained problematic, including those that were vague, disconnected from core content, or overly broad open-ended questions lacking direction and depth. For problem-solving competence, novice teachers successfully posed questions that prompted students to identify root causes and explain cause-and-effect relationships. Nevertheless, difficulties arose with questions that were too general, unclear, or lacked integration of scientific concepts. Regarding critical thinking, teachers were able to generate questions that encouraged reasoning and consideration of multiple perspectives. However, challenges emerged when questions were overly abstract, demanded high levels of interpretation, or lacked sufficient feedback to scaffold students responses
