Abstract:
This study investigates the tourists consumption behavior and the carbon footprint of water-based tourism activities in Khao Sok National Park. The study was conducted utilizing a questionnaire by interviewing 393 tourists and officers. The data were analyzed according to the product category rule (PCR) of the Greenhouse Gas Management Organization in four aspects: travel, food consumption, accommodation, and waste management. The study demonstrated that tourists in Khao Sok National Park mostly were female, aged 2130, had a bachelor's degree, and had a middle income. They mainly travel for relaxation and nature experiences. They participated in activities having a low impact on the environment, for example, taking a boat to experience the nature and relaxing in a peaceful atmosphere. Moreover, most tourists had a high level of knowledge about low-carbon tourism and had environmentally friendly behaviors, such as bringing their own containers. In the aspect of the carbon footprint of water tourism activities, a total of 2,546.46 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent was emitted per year (an average of 0.006 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per person in fiscal year 2024). Travel emitted the most at 73.46%, followed by food consumption at 22.51%, waste management at 3.00%, and accommodation at 1.03%. The main factor contributing to carbon dioxide emission was the use of private boats for travel. This study recommends promoting group travel, using solar or electric boats, preparing food according to the number of tourists to reduce food waste, providing drinking water service points to reduce plastic water bottles, providing solar cells and renewable energy storage, using carbon fees or taxes, as well as creating incentives to support sustainable tourism
