Abstract:
Otters are top predators in freshwater ecosystems, playing crucial roles in maintaining ecological health. However, otter populations globally face threats and are declining towards extinction in some areas. This study investigated the abundance and activity patterns of smooth-coated otters (Lutrogale perspicillata) in the upper Phetchaburi River, Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand. We employed camera trapping with 27 cameras deployed for 2,731 trap nights (December 2021 May2023). We recorded 340 smooth-coated otter events (group size 116 individuals, mean = 3). The naive occupancy was 15.20% of the study area. The best single-season occupancy model (AIC = 804.62, ωi = 0.58) indicated that the probability of occupancy (ψ) was influenced by the distance from moist evergreen forest and distance from dry evergreen forest. The probability of detection (p) depended on rainfall and temperature. The relative abundance index (RAI) was highest in areas with no human activity (RAI = 13.43) and lowest in areas with signs of human activity (RAI = 4.15). Smooth-coated otters were primarily active during the day ( playing, sunbathing, defecating, and hunting). Otters in areas without human disturbance were active in the mornings, while those in areas with human disturbance shifted activity to the afternoons (overlap coefficient ∆4 = 0.68). Our findings suggest that smooth-coated otters in the upper Phetchaburi River prefer areas with less human disturbance and exhibit temporal adaptations to avoid human encounters. These results provide valuable information for smooth-coated otter conservation in this region.
