Abstract:
Napier grass is an important roughage source for ruminants. It can be used with agriculture byproducts to help reduce feed costs and promote rumen digestibility. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate the nutritional value and digestibility of napier silage ensiled with spent mushroom substrate for 21 days of the fermentation period. A complete randomized design was used by assigning napier grass silage as a control group (C) and the other 4 treatments included napier grass ensiled with spent mushroom substrate of P. ostreatus (PO), P. djamor (PD), L. squarrosulus (LS) and L. polychrous (LP) in a ratio of 1 to 1 on dry matter basis. The result showed that the quality of napier silage ensiled with spent mushroom substrate was great silage quality. The nutritional value showed that crude protein and ether extract of napier ensiled with spent mushroom substrate were significantly decreased (P<0.01), while the amount of phenol and tannin were significantly increased (P<0.05). At 24 and 48 hours, the digestibility of plant cell walls increased (P<0.01). Rumen characteristic production such as volatile fatty acids was lower than the control group and methane was higher than the control group (P<0.01). In addition, it was found that the rumen microbial populations were not significantly different (P>0.05). However, it was found that the number of protozoa decreased when napier grass was ensiled with spent mushroom substrate. Therefore, napier grass ensiled with the spent mushroom substrate can be preserved as a great silage quality that can be used as a roughage source for ruminants. This is because the remaining material from the spent mushroom substrate still has nutritional value and can increase the digestibility of plant cell wall fibers
