Abstract:
Understanding the water permeability behavior allows designers to create more efficient road designs. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the moisture characteristic curves and water permeability functions of pavement materials under unsaturated soil conditions using the Instantaneous Profile Method. Additionally, it aims to develop a seepage flow model to describe the behavior of moisture changes and suction changes according to the groundwater level. The materials used in the testing include graded aggregate for Grades A, B, C, and D according to the Department of Highways standards. The study results of the soil characteristic curves show that the moisture content and Air-Entry Suction increase when the particle size of the material decreases or when the material has higher porosity. The study of water permeability functions finds that the saturated permeability coefficients of various pavement material types range from approximately 1.00E7 to 7.00E-8 meters per second. Water seepage slows down when there are small gaps between soil particles, but when soil loses more moisture, materials of the same type with larger particle sizes exhibit higher permeability coefficients. Analysis of water pressure using the Finite Element 2D method, with groundwater levels kept below the pavement by 2 meters and water reaching the surface after 10 days, reveals that the water pressure in the pavement layer from Grade A materials is higher than Grade B at the same time. Meanwhile, the water pressure in the subbase layer from Grade C materials is higher than D (upper), whereas the water pressure in the subbase layer from Grade C materials is higher than D (lower) at the same time
