Abstract:
This research aimed to investigate the properties of the canal dredged sludge (CDS), which is the waste materials from drainage canal in Phetchaburi province. They were classified as silty sand with low shear strength and poor water durability and unsuitable for construction. To solve environmental problems caused by the large amounts of sludge and because of this sludge is not contaminated with heavy metals. CDS was stabilized with the Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and studied the potential for use as construction materials based on the geo-environmental engineering concept. In experimental, air-dried CDS were mixed with OPC at proportions of 150, 200, and 250 kg/m3 and initial water content of 14.32% and 17.00% at curing times of 3, 7, 14 and 28 days. The increase in compressive strength concerning different water-to-cement ratio (w/c ratio) using unconfined compression tests alongside Free-Free resonance test (FFR). The mechanisms of improvement were evaluated using water content from suction test combined with X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and scanning electron microscopic observation (SEM). The results indicated that the unconfined compressive strength of the cement-stabilized sludge exceeding 7 kg/cm2 could be achieved after being cured for 7 days. Utilizing this criterion, the appropriate w/c ratio within the range of 1.00 - 1.50 was identified for subbase layer. In addition, higher initial water content with similar w/c ratio is an important factor in the strength development. These findings were confirmed by the formation of reaction products including calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) and Ettringite which improved internal microstructures. Moreover, Soil-Water Retention Curve (SWRC) revealed a changed behavior after stabilized, characterized by reduced moisture content compared to natural sludge at the same suction value. The utilization of CDS stabilized with OPC had the potential to be used as construction materials, representing a sustainable approach to waste management
