Abstract:
In the global pursuit of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and combating global warming, forests play a vital role in sequestering carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, storing it as biomass. The Wang Chan Forest Project, in collaboration with the Faculty of Forestry at Kasetsart University, aims to transform the project area into a green zone, expediting investigations into forest area changes. This study employs remote sensing techniques to map aboveground biomass (AGB) and develop a biomass model. By utilizing data from the Sentinel1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Sentinel-2 imagery, forest biomass is analyzed to create an AGB model. The study compares AGB estimations derived from Sentinel-1's Polarization VV and Polarization VH, alongside Normalized Difference VegetationIndex (NDVI) from Sentinel2, with physical tree data collected from field surveys conducted on October 29, 2021. Allometric equations based on forest types are used to calculate forest biomass and subsequently develop an aboveground biomass model using Multiple Linear Regression Analysis. The resulting AGB prediction equation is as follows: AGB = 3.35 + 2.96 * V| + 0.20 * H| + 1.51 * NDVI, AGB map are found to be only 0.0016% higher than those obtained from physical field surveys. By combining forest biomass data, the total carbon storage in the Wang Chan Forest Project area is calculated to be 103.38 tons of carbon dioxide. Considering the highest 2021 carbon credit trading price without carbon accumulation, this carbon storage could potentially yield approximately 193,177.22 Thai Baht
