Abstract:
This research aims to study and design an H-type vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT), focusing on the airflow behaviour through the turbine. Various parameters were adjusted based on wind data collected from the intended installation site at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Education Division, Navaminda Kasatriyadhiraj Royal Thai Air Force Academy. The goal was to design a turbine that is both efficient and suitable for the surrounding environment of the department building. The study emphasizes selecting the most efficient airfoil type and angle of attack for the turbine blades. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted using ANSYS Fluent, with three different airfoil profiles NACA0018, S809, and S1046 tested under various pitch angles. Wind speed data was gathered over time at the designated location to ensure realistic boundary conditions for the simulation.
The methodology included a review of relevant literature, wind speed data collection, model design selection, simulation of flow behaviour under different conditions, and evaluation of turbine performance using the power coefficient (Cp) as the key performance indicator. Simulation results indicate that the S1046 airfoil installed at a 1-degree pitch angle yielded the highest power coefficient among all configurations tested. This suggests that this combination is the most suitable for deployment around the Mechanical Engineering Department building.
