Abstract:
The main objectives of this study were to study the overview of animal feed production and its cost, to estimate the demand of each raw material for feed production, and to analyze the results to promote the use of cassava product as a raw material for feed production in Thailand. The researcher collected secondary data from various sources, including raw material prices, feed demand for each animal at each stage, and conditions and constraints in feed formulation, and then analyzed the data by using linear programming. The study results revealed that feed costs in 2022-2023 were higher than those in 2021-2022 by 2.18-4.66 baht per kilogram or approximately 22%-58%, due to many factors, such as the impacts from the Russia-Ukraine War and from the El Niño effect, which affected production, the imports and prices of feed raw materials. From the estimation of the quantity of cassava used in feed production, when setting the maximum percentages of cassava used in feed formulas according to the data provided by the Thai Feed Mill Association, we found that the feed industry used only 1.1-1.2 million tons of cassava or about 8%-9% of total amount of feed production per year. If we increased the maximum percentages of cassava used in feed formulas, the industry could increase the quantity of cassava used as feed raw materials up to 65% of the current quantity used or more than 750,000 tons a year, which would help reduce the feed costs
