Abstract:
Chanthaburi is a province with a variety of tourist attractions and popular for tourists, increasing the amount of solid waste and plastic waste. This research aimed to study the structure and composition of solid waste and plastic waste from tourism activities in Chanthaburi province for solid waste management planning. The study of the solid waste structure from 4 types of tourist attractions that generated plastic waste such as beach attractions, recreational attractions, ecotourism tours, and waterfall attractions by specifying 3 places per type, totaling 12 attractions. The study was conducted in 2 periods of the tourist season, namely (1) long vacation during low season (T1) and (2) long vacation after unlocking the COVID-19 situation (T2). The results found that solid waste compositions from tourism activities consisted of 40.44% organic waste, 19.17% recycled waste, 33.26% general waste, and 7.13% hazardous waste, which were 27.11% of plastic waste. The most type of plastic waste was PP, followed by HDPE and PETE, and the largest amount of solid waste and plastic waste were found in beach attractions. Most of the waste comes from the food selling activities of the mobile stalls. The most kind of plastic waste was plastic tote bags, followed by hot bags, cold bags, and drinking water bottles. Considering the overall data, it is found that 79.84% of the plastic waste can be recycled and upcycled and 20.16% was not worth for recycling process which should be sent to landfills. The approach of solid waste and plastic waste management was to control activities at the source of food mobile stalls to change food packaging and reduce plastic consumption. Moreover, tourist attractions should set up solid waste separating bins, especially plastic and recycled waste, to make them easier to manage and reduce the amount of solid waste disposed at landfills.
