Systematics of the moss genus leucobryum hampe (Leucobryaceae) in Thailand
Abstract:
The moss genus Leucobryum Hampe are about 80100 species worldwide with predominantly temperate and tropical distribution. Based on previous surveys and taxonomic changes, eight species and two variety of moss genus Leucobryum have been added in the moss checklist of Thailand. However, species identification remains unclear due to morphological variation and taxonomic confusion of Leucobryum in Thailand. Therefore, unknown species, misidentification and synonym still remain the problems. In this study, we integrated multi-scaled research for moss genus Leucobryum by using chemical profiles from TLC and HPLC, chemometric analysis, morphological studies from Thai and foreign herbaria, morphometric analysis, generating four markers of molecular data, and reconstructing phylogenies.The studies of Leucobryum from herbaria and new specimens collected from the new localities showed that ten species and one varity of mosses genus Leucobryum in Thailand were recognized: L. aduncum var. aduncum, L. arfakianum, L. bowringii, L. chlorophyllosum, L. javense, L. juniperoideum, L. sanctum, L. scabrum, L. scalare, and L. sericeum. Among these, L. scalare was resurrected to species rank by integrating molecular phylogenetics with morphological data. From phylogenetic studies could separate the two species and showed reciprocally monophyletic. Both qualitative and quantitative characters could also separate L. scalare from L. aduncum as shown with PCA and PERMANOVA. Also, two species and one variety (L. aduncum var. teysmannianum and L. gracillimum) were dubious names. One species (L. siamicum) was excluded name. The results of chemical profiles analysis showed that the studies of TLC and HPLC could be used to separated the genus and species. However, we could only separate the genus from TLC. The HPLC chromatograms showed similar patterns within the same species and could separate the genus and species. The results from analysis showed that PCA and PERMANOVA were able to separate Leucobryum species. These chemical study could support evidence for species delimitation with morphological stuidies. This work showed the revision of Leucobryum in Thailand is from far complete and will require more additional studies in the future.
