Problems and proposed strategies for the enhancement of speaking skills for undergraduate Chinese students studying in the hospitality industry program at North Bangkok University
Abstract:
This research aimed to investigate problems of speaking skills of undergraduate Chinese students studying in the Hospitality Industry Program and to construct proposed strategies for the enhancement of speaking skills. This research was conducted as a mixed- methods study. The research was conducted at North Bangkok University. The respondents were divided into three groups: 27 undergraduate Chinese students enrolled in the Hospitality Industry Program during the first semester of the 2025 academic year, 15 English teachers from the Liberal Arts Faculty, and 5 teachers and administrators from the Hospitality Industry Program. In this study, two research instruments were employed for the collection of data and information; namely, 1) a questionnaire for investigating problems of speaking skill and 2) a set of questions for focus group discussion meetings for the evaluation and approval of the proposed strategies for the enhancement of speaking skill. The information and data collected were analyzed through statistical analysis and content analysis method and presented in terms of frequency count, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The results and findings indicated that: 1) The problems of speaking skill of undergraduate Chinese students studying in the Hospitality Industry Program at North Bangkok University were found at the highest level, with mean scores ranging from 4.21-4.65. 2) The proposed strategies for the enhancement of English speaking skill were categorized into five chapters: (1) strategies for learners of English speaking focusing on self-directed learning and participation in speaking activities, (2) strategies for instructors of English speaking, emphasizing teacher roles and creating an encouraging classroom atmosphere, 3) strategies for classroom management including grouping strategies and monitoring group discussions, 4) strategies for teaching-learning materials covering appropriate material selection and development of speaking tasks, and 5) strategies for evaluation of teaching-learning speaking English including assessment tools and constructive feedback provision.
