Species Diversity of BEGONIA L. in Northern Thailand
Abstract:
The species diversity of Begonia L. (Begoniaceae) was studied in 15 provinces in northern Thailand. Field surveys at national parks, forest parks, wildlife sanctuaries, non hunting areas, and other areas included 47 places. I collected 97 specimens and examined specimens in some Thai herbaria. I studied during May 2009 to September 2012. Eleven species of Begonia L. could be identified and in 4 sections, viz. Diplocilinium: B. incerta Craib, B. modestiflora Kurz, B. putii Craib, and B. soluta Craib, Parvibegonia: B. demissa Craib and B. martabanica A. DC., Platycentrum: B. cathcartii Hook. f. & Thoms., B. integrifolia Dalzell, B. palmata D. Don, and B. siamensis Gagnep., and Reichenheimia: B. brandisiana* Kurz. Seven unknown species are also included. All species were studied for botanical characteristics, ecology with descriptions, illustrations, and photographs. Begonia L. habits are perennial herbs, deciduous or evergreen, terrestrial, epilithic, or epiphytic. Habitats include are moist and shaded areas, near waterfalls, watercourse, and cliffs. In the bedrock are granite, limestone, sandstone, and shale. Begonia could be found in seven different forest types, viz. upper montane rain forest, lower montane rain forest, lower montane scrub, mixed deciduous forest, deciduous dipterocarp forest, pine + deciduous dipterocarp forest, and mixed deciduous forest + limestone montane. The elevations of specimens were from 100-2,565 meter above sea level.
