DEVELOPMENT OF CLEANING SYSTEM FOR USING WASTE COOKING OIL AS A FUEL IN MODIFIED DIESEL ENGING
Abstract:
It has been known that vegetable oils could be used as a fuel in a diesel engine for many decades. Dr. Rudolf Diesel who invented the diesel engine in 1895 used peanut oil as a fuel for the engine. Therefore, this study aimed at developing a cleaning system to purify waste cooking oil as an altemative form of renewable energy. The study concentrated on design and filtration efficiency development by installing an array of filters with successively finer grades (20, 10, 8, and 4 micron), in order to have better quality of waste cooking oil that could be used as a fuel in the modified diesel engine. The system design focused on easy to operate and low maintenance cost which are suitable for local people. After purification, the chemical components of the waste cooking oil (WCO) was analyzed and engine performance tests were conducted to compare engine performance using WCO and diesel. Some of the parameters observed included fuel consumption, exhaust gas emission and black smoke density etc. The results of this study found that WCO had a density of $0.900~gm/cm3$ at $28.5^{\circ}$ C and a kinematic viscosity of $50.36~mm2/sec$ at $40^{\circ}C$ C. Engine performance tests found that the engine running on WCO gave slightly higher values for torque and power than the engine running on diesel. However the differences were statistically insignificant. Test of emission found that WCO produced slightly higher hydrocarbon (HC), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Carbon monoxide (Co), Carbon dioxide (CO2). These differences were also statistically insignificant. However, emission of the Particulate Matter (PM) from the engine running on WCO was significantly higher than the engine running on diesel. With regards fuel cost analysis it was found that use of WCO as a fuel gave a saving cost about 2,191.18 Baht per month when compared with the use of diesel. This translates to a saving of about 361,023.16 Bath in fuel cost for the whole lifetime of the engine of about 10 years. In conclusion, the development of a cleaning system to purify waste cooking oil under this research was successful. Waste cooking oil (WCO) had sufficiently high quality such that it could replace diesel fuel in a modified diesel engine and produced high torque and high power. Even with costs incurred in engine modification, use of WCO was still economically feasible to use. Therefore this cleaning system may be easily be adopted by rural people to enable the to use waste cooking oil as an alternative and renewable energy source to replace diesel fuel.
