Stability and modeling of biogas plant involving Co-Digestion of palm oil mill effluent and rubber latex wastewater using scale-down approach
Abstract:
The case study of the failure of the biogas power generation process is particularly interesting and it is the focus of this research. Especially the complexity in the process that mixes two wastewaters from a palm oil mill (POME) and a Rubber latex plant (RLE). The control without proper knowledge causes to the system to fail while the accumulation of sulfide until it inhibits to the production of methane. VFA acid production rose by more than 9,169 mg/L, which is more than the system can handle. A mathematical model was therefore created to simulate steady and dynamic state conditions. It was found that the sigmoidal equation could well explain the effect of VFA on ALK on pH, which was consistent with the experimental data and the failure could be explained systematically. In addition, the BMP experiment was conducted to study the co-digestive interaction between POME and RLE at different ratios in the temperature range of 30-45 oC. It was found that at 30-40 °C, RLE to POME ratio below 30% have a mutually supportive effect having the methane content between 53-55%, and the lowest methane was obtained at the proportion RLE 100%. The BMP experiments were described using the Gompertz two-substrate model and the Monod two-substrate model equations. The pilot-scale digestion for co-digestion was built to confirm the validity of the Monod two-substrate model equation. The digestion performed well at the beginning until day 55, after that free ammonia concentrations rose up above 1000 ppm. This caused the system to slowly collapse and eventually fail. However, biogas would still be produced, but the methane content decreased.
The model is then calibrated using data from the scaled-down experimentation using the non-constrained least-square optimization. It has been found that the most readily biodegradable ratio is 15-25%. The Gompertz two-substrate model and Monod Two-substrate model are suitable for explaining and predicting both batch and continuous digestions. This study could be further developed for explain difficult degradation systems and more complex ones.
