Modified and applied water quality index for Pak Phanang River, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand
Abstract:
Pak Phanang River is important for agriculture, aquaculture, and water supply in
Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. However, water quality in this river usually degrades during
the rainy season. Stakeholders in this area are concerned about water quality, and they need a
simple warning system to communicate with river users. In this study, a water quality index
was developed using principal component analysis (PCA) with SPSS to identify major
parameters influencing water quality in the river. Water quality data from Pak Phanang River
from 20082018 were used to develop an appropriate water quality index for this river. The
results showed that parameters were divided into three components explaining 78.65% of the
water quality variation in the river. The first component included total coliform bacteria
(TCB) and fecal coliform bacteria (FCB); the second component included dissolved oxygen
(DO) and ammonia (NH₃); and the third component included biochemical oxygen demand
(BOD₅). Consequently, three parameters from each component, including TCB, DO, and
BOD₅, were selected to develop the water quality index (WQI) for the river. The developed
WQI demonstrated 73.8% similarity with the WQI of the Pollution Control Department, which
uses five parameters to rate overall water quality status in Thailand.
