UNDERSTANDING OF THE CYCLE OF STARS CONCEPT OF GRAD 5 STUDENTSTHROUGH MIS LEARNING SUPPLEMENTED WITH KWL
Abstract:
The aims of this study were study and compare student understanding of the cycle of stars concept of grade 5 students before and after learning through Model-centered instructional sequence (MIS) supplemented with KWL techniques. The samples were 20 grade 5 students in the 2nd semester of the 2020 academic year. Research instruments consisted of: 1) 6 lesson plans based on MIS supplemented with KWL, each contained 2 learning hours per week, 2) two-tier multiple choice rock concept test with 7 items. Data analysis was done by using statistical values such as mean, standard deviation, percentage, and using t-test for dependent samples to determine whether there is a statistically significant difference between means of students understanding before and after learning and using McNemar test to determine whether the proportion of students who had non-scientific conceptions before learning decreased after the intervention. Results revealed that 1) Students' conceptual understanding of the cycle of stars concept of grade 5 students through using the MIS supplemented with KWL. after learning ( = 14.15 or 70.75%) was higher than before learning ( = 4.40 or 26.07%). 2) There was a significant change in students understanding of the cycle of stars concept of grade 5 students through using the MIS supplemented with KWL. The number of students changing their understanding from non-scientific to scientific view was greater than the number of those changing from scientific to non-scientific view.
