Design and development of the flipped classroom to promote motivation and learning outcomes in learning Chinese speaking for primary school students
Abstract:
With the increasing international influence of Chinese, more Thai students are beginning to learn the language. However, learning Chinese is complex and requires memorizing many characters, and the traditional teacher-centered classroom model leads to a lack of student interest and motivation. This research aims to use technology as a tool to enhance the motivation of Thai elementary school students to learn Chinese and transform traditional classrooms into active learning environments. The flipped classroom is the main concept of this research to encourage students to learn through extracurricular learning media according to their different abilities. It also creates a learning environment that emphasizes classroom activities instead of learning solely from the teacher, transforming this teacher-centered teaching model into an active learning process. This study adopted a quasi-experimental design, involving 90 fifth-grade students, to compare the effects of the flipped classroom and traditional elassroom on oral Chinese learning. The results showed that students learning in the flipped classroom and active learning environment achieved significantly higher learning outcomes than those in the traditional classroom. At the same time, their learning motivation was also noticeably enhanced, including increased interest in learning Chinese, greater self-confidence, and higher classroom engagement. These findings indicate that the flipped classroom can not only improve students' learning performance but also effectively stimulate their learning motivation, providing a feasible approach for improving Chinese education for Thai primary school students.
