Investigating Thai students English language autonomous learning
Abstract:
Autonomous learning, which emphasizes learners taking charge of their learning, plays a vital role in effective English language learning. However, attempts to foster autonomous learning in the Thai context have faced many challenges. Therefore, this study aims to explore the autonomous English language learning of Thai students who learn English effectively to inform future attempts to foster autonomous learning about how autonomous learning thrives in the Thai context. The present study aims to investigate the autonomous learning of Thai students through three constructs suggested by the literature to reflect autonomous learning namely, learner beliefs, learning behaviors, and factors influencing English language learning. The study employed an exploratory sequential mixed methods approach, which began with a qualitative phase and was followed by a quantitative phase. The qualitative phase included interviews exploring the three constructs in English language learning experienced by fifteen Thai first-year undergraduate students, who were effective English language learners. The analysis of the qualitative findings guided the development of the questionnaire which was used in the quantitative phase. The questionnaire was completed by three hundred and ninety-six undergraduate students. The data obtained from the questionnaire were used to develop a Multiple Indicators Multiple Causes (MIMIC) model. Briefly, the findings revealed that the participants hold the belief that English is important. They reported exhibiting active and inactive learning behaviors in class and out of class. Their statements suggested they possess a wide range of metacognitive knowledge including person, strategic, and task knowledge. Internal and external factors influencing their English language learning were identified. Moreover, the findings unveil relationships between the factors influencing English language learning and the three constructs which suggest that the manipulation of these factors may help in fostering autonomous learning in the Thai context.
