Utilizing memrise application to promote Chinese-speaking learning achievement for international students
Abstract:
Today, Thai schools are increasingly teaching Chinese to youngsters to prepare them for future employment prospects. However, non-native learners face difficulties due to the special characteristics of the Chinese language, such as its tonal and character-based spelling. approaches, which frequently rely on textbooks, are rigid and cause students to have poor oral fluency. Innovative teaching techniques and technology integration have been suggested as solutions to these problems. One possible option for developing interactive learning environments that make use of AI chatbots for oral practice is MEMRISE. Through gamified and self-paced learning experiences, it can help students with speaking, vocabulary retention, and pronunciation while encouraging engagement. In order to improve students' oral Chinese proficiency, this study incorporated the MEMRISE application into classroom exercises. Fifty junior high school children from Ban Nong Khong School in Chiang Mai, Thailand, are taking part. They were divided into two groups: the experimental group, where students used MEMRISE to learn, and the control group, which learned without MEMRISE. The results indicate that the experimental group shows higher learning motivation compared to the control group across four dimensions: intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, self-determination, and academic performance. The experimental group shows higher oral proficiency compared to the control group across four dimensions: vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and fluency. The students in the experimental group achieve higher learning achievement than those in the control group.
