The Relationship between economic development and carbon emissions: case of Myanmar

Abstract: In this empirical study, we estimate the short-run and long- run relationship between CO2 emissions as an environmental pollution indicator and GDP per capita as an economic development indicator in Myanmar by using annual time series data over the period of 1990-2020. The study also rigorously examines alternative indicators, including fossil fuel energy consumption and inward foreign direct investment.The primary aim of this research is to empirically assess the relationship between economic development and environment within the specific context of Myanmar. The dynamic estimates of the long-term and short-term relationship among CO2 emissions, per capita real GDP, Fossil-fuel Energy Consumption, Inward Foreign Direct Investment are built through an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model.The results of the ARDL bound test have verified the presence of short- and long-run estimates between the research variables. The study finds a positive long-run relationship between GDP per capita and CO₂ emissions in Myanmar. This finding suggests that as Myanmar's GDP per capita increases, so does the emission of CO2. Furthermore, the findings confirm that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between CO2 emissions and fossil fuel energy consumption. Similarly, the results validate an inverted U-shaped link between CO2 emissions and IFDI.

Abstract: ในการศึกษาเชิงประจักษ์นี้เราประเมินความสัมพันธ์ระยะสั้นและระยะยาวระหว่างการปล่อย CO2 เป็นตัวบ่งชี้มลพิษต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมและ GDP ต่อหัวเป็นตัวบ่งชี้การพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจในพม่าโดยใช้ข้อมูลอนุกรมเวลาประจำปีในช่วงปี 2533-2563 การศึกษายังตรวจสอบตัวชี้วัดทางเลือกอย่างเข้มงวดรวมถึงการใช้พลังงานเชื้อเพลิงฟอสซิลและการลงทุนโดยตรงจากต่างประเทศภายในเป้าหมายหลักของการวิจัยนี้คือการประเมินความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจและสิ่งแวดล้อมภายในบริบทเฉพาะของพม่า การประมาณการแบบไดนามิกของความสัมพันธ์ระยะยาวและระยะสั้นระหว่างการปล่อย CO2, GDP จริงต่อหัว, การใช้พลังงานเชื้อเพลิงฟอสซิล, การลงทุนโดยตรงจากต่างประเทศภายในถูกสร้างขึ้นผ่านโมเดลความล่าช้าแบบกระจายอัตโนมัติ (ARDL)ผลลัพธ์ของการทดสอบที่ถูกผูกไว้ ARDL ได้ตรวจสอบการปรากฏตัวของการประมาณการระยะสั้นและระยะยาวระหว่างตัวแปรการวิจัย การศึกษาพบว่ามีความสัมพันธ์ระยะยาวระหว่าง GDP ต่อหัวและการปล่อย CO2 ในพม่า การค้นพบนี้แสดงให้เห็นว่าเมื่อ GDP ของพม่าเพิ่มขึ้นต่อหัวเพิ่มขึ้นดังนั้นการปล่อย CO2 ก็เช่นกัน นอกจากนี้ผลการวิจัยยืนยันว่ามีความสัมพันธ์รูปตัวยูกลับด้านระหว่างการปล่อย CO2 และการใช้พลังงานเชื้อเพลิงฟอสซิล ในทำนองเดียวกันผลลัพธ์ตรวจสอบการเชื่อมโยงรูปตัวยูคว่ำระหว่างการปล่อย CO2 และ IFDI
