Dietary diversity and its social determinants among Myanmar university students, Chiang Mai province
Abstract:
Optimal human health largely relies on adequate nutrition, which is best achieved by consuming dietary diversity that provides all essential macro and micronutrients. This study investigates the dietary diversity status and associated determinants of Myanmar university students in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. A cross-sectional study was conducted in three universities through the self-administered online survey from 3 October to 5-November 2024. The statistical analysis was done using Stata 15.1, by descriptive analysis to summarize the data, and multivariable analysis with multiple linear regression to evaluate the determinants of dietary diversity score (DDS). A total of 170 students, 88 (51.76%) males, and 82 (48.24%) females participated in the study. The median (IQR) DDS was 6±3 with one score as the minimum and nine as the highest DDS. The significant determinants influencing the DDS included gender and religion ; intrapersonal level: self-efficacy, skipping meals due to not readiness of food, and stress ; interpersonal level: eating meals with family members and others, and receiving dietary suggestions from friends ; institutional limitations to diverse foods access ; community-level religious restrictions and food advertisements on billboards. Multilevel health promotion and dietary behavior change measures must be taken to enhance DD, nutrition, health, well-being, and continuous development of the students.
