Strategies for improving the sustainability credentials of facial skincare product containers and packaging
Abstract:
Facial skincare products are topical formulations that supports skin integrity, enhance its appearance, and relieve skin conditions to maintain healthy skin. They can include cleansers, serums, moisturizers, sunscreens, and masks. The containers and packaging they come in can often be harmful to the environment after disposal. Both producers and consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the seriousness of this issue along with the possibility of it influencing purchasing decisions. Accordingly, there is a need to improve the environmental sustainability credentials of facial skincare product containers and packaging through innovative design and use of materials and increase industry awareness on how this can be done. The primary objectives of this research are to examine consumers perceptions and preferences regarding the use and adoption of environmentally friendly and sustainable containers and packaging for skincare products, and to develop and promote design strategies that enhance environmental sustainability in the facial skincare market. Specifically, this work focuses on and assesses consumer attitudes and preferences towards the adoption of eco-friendly containers and packaging for skincare products. The investigation undertaken for it employs a mixed methodology. Quantitative data were gathered on these issues through an online survey and complementary qualitative insights were additionally obtained on them through in-depth interviews conducted with users and producers of sustainable skincare products in Thailand. The key findings from this research will be used to develop and suggest best practice design strategies for the creation of more sustainable facial skincare containers and packaging. It is intended that the information and suggestions given in this work can contribute to the long-term objective of aligning skincare containers and packaging into a closed-loop environmentally friendly lifecycle that benefits all.
