Exploring color dynamics of oscillations and chemical waves in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction : school laboratory experiments
Abstract:
The Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction, a fascinating example of far-from-equilibrium chemistry,
is rarely incorporated into school laboratories. An elective course at Mahidol Wittayanusorn School (MWIT)
provided students with a unique opportunity to observe chemical oscillations and wave patterns. Students
conducted two experiments using the BZ reaction to observe clock reactions and wave patterns. In the first
experiment, the oscillating reaction was recorded as a video using a smartphone. The video was then converted
into RGB images, which were analyzed to demonstrate dynamic color changes. By studying the oscillation
periods and amplitudes, students investigated the effects of bromate concentrations and stirring rates on the
reaction. In the second experiment, the phenomena of chemical waves were explored in detail, allowing
students to measure the wavelength and period using graph paper and a stopwatch. From these measurements,
the wave velocity was calculated and the reaction's rate constant was determined. These experiments
encourage critical thinking and offer an exploration of nonlinear dynamics, self-organization, and chemical
kinetics, enriching students' understanding of advanced chemistry concepts
