Application of ultrasonic-assisted and solid phase extraction using MWCNTs sorbent for formaldehyde analysis in food samples
Abstract:
This study is focused on investigating sample preparation techniques for the extraction of
formaldehyde in food samples. Ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) were
chosen as techniques for extracting formaldehyde. Under the optimum conditions, a sample (shiitake
mushrooms) of 0.1 g in acetic acid as a solvent using a power rate of 80% of probe 6 mm for 10 minutes
was performed successfully for extraction in the UAE. Then, the SPE technique was used for extraction and
preconcentration. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes were synthesized and used as sorbents in SPE.
Formaldehyde was eluted with eluent, 2 mL of acetonitrile-methanol, from SPE and was derivatized with
Nashs reagent before analysis by a UV-visible spectrophotometer. Good linearity (R² = 0.998) was achieved
in concentration ranges of 0.25 to 10.0 mg kg−1, with limits of detection and quantitation at 0.08 mg kg−1
and 0.27 mg kg−1, respectively. The method demonstrated good accuracy, with recoveries ranging from
98.16 ± 0.007 to 108.34 ± 0.015%, and good precision, with RSDs ranging from 1.29% to 3.65%.
Formaldehyde concentrations detected in shiitake mushrooms, tremella mushrooms, and jellyfish were 0.15
± 0.02, 0.16 ± 0.02, and 0.13 ± 0.02 mg kg−1, respectively. This simple and cost-effective method uses
minimal sample and solvent, making it suitable for food analysis.
