Development of a cost-effective rotary torque measurement system using incremental encoders
Abstract:
This paper presents the development and validation of a rotary torque measurement system using only two incremental encoders. The proposed method focuses on estimating torque by measuring the relative twist angle caused by the applied torque, leveraging the material's elastic deformation. Unlike conventional rotary torque transducers, which are costly and bulky, the proposed system offers a compact and affordable alternative. A calibration curve was constructed by comparing the proposed method with a commercial rotary torque transducer to ensure accuracy. The system's performance was evaluated through two tests: the Stepwise Torque Loading Test and the Dynamic Torque Response Test. The results showed high accuracy with low error metrics and a relative error below 5%. BlandAltman analysis confirmed good agreement between the proposed system and the reference device. Furthermore, the systems hardware cost was reduced by over 70% compared to commercial alternatives. The findings suggest that this method is a reliable and cost-effective alternative for torque measurement in low-power applications.
