A Study of English Speaking Skills of Students Studying in Matthayomsuksa 7 at Sangha Secondary Schools in Luang Prabang, Lao People s Democratic Republic
Abstract:
The objectives of this research were (1), to study the problem of English-speaking skills of Matthayomsuksa 7 students. (2), to seek a way to solve the problem of English-speaking skills of Students studying in Matthayomsuksa 7 at Sangha Secondary Schools in Luang Prabang, Lao People's Democratic Republic. This research used a mixed method combining both quantitative and qualitative data to answer the research questions, the study was based on the analysis of 40 questionnaires, which were distributed to 40 students of Matthayomsuksa 7, to know the problems of English speaking and to suggest them the best ways to solve the problem of English-speaking skills, in addition, 5 key informant teachers were interviewed to observe vividly their experiences in teaching English as a second language.
The finding of the problems in this study shows that most of the students faced difficulties in English speaking in a very short period, lack of vocabulary, and loss of confidence to speak with another, which were totaled rate at a high level ( = 3.82, S.D. = 1.06). The finding of the ways to solve the problems shows that many respondents are required to make self-motivation and use various strategies to support them in learning English speaking such as; reading more English books, listening to English music, watching English movies, practicing with friends, teachers, and other people, which were totaled rate at a high level ( = 4.25, S.D. = 0.76) According to the interview, most of the teachers reported that students lacked confidence, lacked skills in learning languages, and the ways to solve the problems were to make confidence, motivation, and practice more and more in their daily lives.
