Exploring the adoption of AI-powered translation tools to enhance intercultural communication competence of Chinese students in Thailand
Abstract:
This study investigates the enhancement of intercultural communication competence among Chinese students in Thailand through AI-powered translation tools, proposing an innovative UTAUT-SECI framework that integrates the UTAUT and the Socialization, Externalization, Combination, Internalization (SECI) model. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study surveyed 212 Chinese students, conducted focus group interviews with four experts, and analyzed WeChat text data to address three objectives: identifying adoption factors, enhancing cross-cultural competence, and developing an optimal communication model. Findings reveal that facilitating conditions and effort expectancy drive tool adoption, while cultural insensitivity limits performance expectancy. The SECI model transforms tacit cultural knowledge into explicit skills, fostering linguistic, cultural, technical, and social competences. The UTAUT-SECI framework addresses these barriers through culturally adaptive tools, intuitive interfaces, peer networks, and training workshops, offering a scalable solution for multicultural education. Theoretical contributions include extending UTAUT and SECI to cross-cultural contexts, while practical implications support Thai universities in integrating AI tools for academic and social inclusion. Limitations include technical delays in real-time translation and a geographically limited sample, suggesting future research into advanced NLP models and broader populations. This study provides a pioneering model for leveraging AI in cross-cultural education, with potential applications across ASEAN contexts.
