Abstract:
This research aims to: (1) study the biography and role of Vidhura Paṇḍita in the Vidhura Jātaka; (2) examine the Dhamma principles reflected in his actions; and (3) analyze his role using a documentary research method based on an examination of the Tipiṭaka, its commentaries, and related academic literature. The research findings reveal that Vidhura Paṇḍita represents a former life of the Bodhisatta, in which he cultivated the perfection of truthfulness (sacca-pāramī), reflecting his unwavering commitment to truth, honesty, and virtue. He played a crucial role as a royal advisor, Dhamma preacher, and guardian of justice, demonstrating his ability to resolve conflicts through rational thinking grounded in ethical principles. The Dhamma principles exemplified in Vidhura Paṇḍitas role include sacca (truthfulness), the Threefold Training (tisikkhā), the Seven Qualities of a Good Man (sappurisa-dhamma), the Four Divine Abidings (brahmavihāra), hiri-ottappa (moral shame and moral dread), and sādhunara-dhamma (the virtues of a good person). These principles highlight his moral integrity and unwavering ethical standards. Moreover, Vidhura Paṇḍita exemplifies selflessness and moral steadfastness, serving as a role model for virtuous leadership. This study analyzes the role of Vidhura Paṇḍita in the Vidhura Jātaka and identifies three key dimensions of his character: self-governance, interpersonal leadership, and task management. These roles illustrate exemplary qualities that remain relevant and applicable to contemporary society, such as ethical leadership, conflict resolution through justice, and the dissemination of Dhamma principles to promote social harmony. The findings further reveal that Vidhura Paṇḍitas conduct deepens the understanding of core Buddhist values, highlighting the significance of applying Dhamma in personal and social development toward sustainable well-being.
