The Development of Training Curriculum for Enhancing Leadership of Standardized Training Resident Physicians in Guangxi Province, People's Republic of China
Abstract:
The objectives of this research were 1) to study the current situation, problems, and needs, 2) to develop the training curriculum, 3) to implement the training curriculum, and 4) to evaluate the training curriculum for enhancing leadership of standardized training resident physicians in Guangxi Province, People's Republic of China. This study was divided into four phases: Phase 1-Studying the current states, problems and needs on the leadership of standardized training resident physicians in Guangxi Province, People's Republic of China. The samples were 336 standardized training resident physicians from the six hospitals in Nanning City, determined by using Yamane's formula, stratified random sampling, and simple random sample techniques. The instrument used was a 5-rating scale questionnaire. The obtained data were analyzed by using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation; Phase 2- Developing the training curriculum. The target group was six experts who were asked to participate in a semi-structured interview. Content analysis technique was performed on the interview data; Phase 3-Implementing the training curriculum. The subjects were 30 second-year standardized training resident physicians from the Minzu Hospital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guangxi Province. The instrument was the test used as pre- and post-tests. The collected data were analyzed by using mean, standard deviation, and dependent samples t-test; Phase 4-Evaluating the training curriculum. The target groups were 30 standardized training resident physicians and five experts. The research instruments were satisfaction questionnaire and questionnaire for evaluating the quality of the training curriculum. The data were analyzed by using mean, and standard deviation. The findings could be summarized as follows: 1. The current states and needs on leadership of standardized training resident physicians in Guangxi Province, People's Republic of China in overall were at a moderate level. The highest mean score was ethics and professionalism, followed by comprehensive personal quality, and expertise and technology. In contrast, the two lowest mean scores were communication and cooperation ability, and management ability. 2. The developed training curriculum included two modules: communication and cooperation ability, and management ability. Each module was trained for five days, totally 10 days. The developed curriculum comprised both theoretical learning and practical exercises. 3. The results of the training curriculum implementation showed that the leadership knowledge and ability level of standardized training resident physicians were significantly higher than after the training of Module 1: Communication and cooperation ability and Module 2: Management ability at the statistical level of .01, and the training curriculum was effective and feasible. 4. The standardized training resident physicians were satisfied with the leadership training curriculum at the highest level. The highest mean score was trainers and materials, followed by training modules, curriculum contents, and training methods and efficiency, respectively. In addition, the quality evaluation of the utility, feasibility, propriety and accuracy of the training curriculum in overall verified by five experts was at the highest level. The highest mean score was the quality of feasibility, followed by utility, propriety, and accuracy, respectively.
