Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is 1) to study the Buddhist ethics of Gratitude, 2) to study the Phi Pu-Ta tradition of Isan people, 3) to analyze the Buddhist ethics of Gratitude through the Phi Pu-Ta tradition.
The result of research found that;
Buddhist ethics is rooted in the concepts and methods of seeing the world and things from Buddhism. For this reason, Buddhist ethics is characterized as "Religious Ethics" characteristics of buddhist ethics can be classified into two types: Buddhist ethics, traditional refers to the ethics that come from teachings in Buddhism. and contemporary Buddhist ethics Refers to a set of explanations of Buddhist ethics in various conflicting issues. or criteria to consider and decide where alternatives are required. to settle conflicts that arise Gratitude is a principle practiced by the Buddha himself and instructed his disciples to practice the principle of gratitude. The principle of filial piety is therefore an important Buddhist ethics principle and can be applied in practice.
The tradition Phi Pu-Ta is a belief that is based on the belief in "ghosts" or holy spirits. which is the traditional belief of the people in the community before accepting Buddhism Isan people believe that Phi Ta Pu can protect everything. From the lives of villagers, pets, as well as the common property of the village It can also prevent forest ghosts and ghosts from other places from disturbing the villagers as well. Phi Pu-Ta will help good people who follow the traditions. or rules of society will punish those who violate the rules and do not respect the spirits of their grandfathers.
From the analysis of Buddhist ethics, gratitude through the Phi Pu-Ta tradition it is the first ethical principle in Buddhism. because the principles of Buddhist ethics at the beginning level have a purpose in order for people to behave properly, be good, have discipline co-exist with others and various environments well, be supportive, do not encroach, do not destroy, therefore it is stipulated that normal human beings have at least 5 precepts.
