An Applying Buddhist Scriptures for Conflict Resolutions Between Parents and Children in Modern Societies
Abstract:
The present thesis is an applying Buddhist scripture for conflict reclusion between Parents and Children in modern societies It is qualitative research that has three objectives, namely: 1) to study the conflict between Parents and children in modern societies, 2) to study The Buddhist Scripture to solve the conflict between Parents and children in modern societies, 3) to proposing the conflict resolution between Parents and children by applying Buddhist Scriptures.
The first finding of this research shows that conflict between parents and children in modern societies often arises from a clash of values, communication gaps, and differing expectations shaped by rapid social and technological changes. Parents, influenced by traditional norms and life experiences, may prioritize discipline, academic success, and conformity, while children, shaped by modern ideals and digital exposure, tend to value autonomy, self-expression, and social acceptance. This generational divide is further intensified by inadequate communication, where both sides may feel misunderstood or unheard. Issues such as excessive control, peer pressure, career choices, and the influence of social media contribute to misunderstandings and emotional distance. As a result, these conflicts not only strain family relationships but also impact the emotional well-being of both parents and children, highlighting the need for mutual empathy, open dialogue, and adaptive parenting strategies.
The second finding shows that Buddhist scriptures offer effective solutions for resolving parents and children conflict in modern societies. Teachings such as the Five Precepts, mindfulness (Sati), loving-kindness (Mettā), and the Four Brahmavihāras serve as practical tools for enhancing compassionate communication and reducing familial tensions. These principles promote awareness, empathy, and patience, fostering deeper interpersonal connections and minimizing misunderstandings. Mindfulness, in particular, enhances present-moment awareness, encouraging active listening and thoughtful responses that improve emotional regulation and family dynamics. The final finding shows that the Five Precepts promote ethical behaviorsuch as refraining from harmful speech and cultivating honestythat can foster trust and respect in family interactions. Mindfulness encourages both parents and children to remain present and aware of their emotions and reactions, helping them respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively during conflicts. Loving-kindness cultivates an atmosphere of goodwill and compassion, which softens harsh attitudes and promotes reconciliation. The Four Brahmavihāras offer a balanced approach to emotional harmony. Together, these teachings nurture patience, empathy, and understanding, enabling families to navigate disagreements with a spirit of non-judgment, deep listening, and mutual careultimately restoring harmony and strengthening familial bonds.
