Proposing Social Media Platforms for Peace-Making According to Buddhist Teachings for Resolving Family Conflicts
Abstract:
This dissertation has three objectives: 1) to study existing social media platforms and their roles in peace-making for resolving family conflicts, 2) to examine Buddhist teachings for resolving family conflicts, and 3) to propose social media platforms for peace-making according to Buddhist teachings; This is qualitative research; The research design includes document study and in-depth interviews; Data were collected from relevant academic documents and six key informants; The research tools were structured interview questions and content analysis; The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.
The results of the research found that:
The results of research from objective no. 1 show that existing social media platforms can both contribute to and help resolve family conflicts. The lack of non-verbal cues often leads to miscommunication, emotional reactivity, and conflict escalation. However, when these platforms are structured with ethical guidelines and community moderation, they can become spaces for mindful communication and conflict resolution.
The results of research from objective no. 2 reveal that Buddhist teachings offer effective approaches to resolving family conflict in digital contexts. Principles such as Right Speech (Sammā Vācā), Mindfulness (Sati), Loving-Kindness (Metta), and Gratitude (Katannu-Katavedi), along with Ethical Conduct (Sīla), Karma (Kamma), the Noble Eightfold Path, and the Seven Adhikaraṇasamatha, provide ethical frameworks for non-reactive, compassionate dialogue. Structured Dharma-based content and mindfulness-based engagement were found to reduce online hostility and promote constructive interaction.
The results of research from objective no. 3 led to the development of a structured social media framework based on Buddhist teachings. The proposed model includes AI-assisted moderation to guide ethical communication, Dharma discussions for emotional awareness, and formats like short videos, guided meditations, and online support groups. These elements transform social media into a platform for digital peace-making and reconciliation within families.
