The strength analysis of Suradecho locomotive frame using finite element method
Abstract:
The strength analysis of a locomotive frame specially designed for the TRRN Railway Challenge presents extraordinary engineering challenges that first arose in Thailand. This study emphasizes both static and failure analyses of the special locomotive frame to ensure it's structurally strong and safe enough to participate in the competition. Using finite element analysis (FEA), the frame will be evaluated by encountering various static loading conditions to determine stress distribution and the failure mode that possibly occurs, as well as identifying areas where failure may emerge. The locomotive frame must be able to support more than 80 kilograms of two battery packs and must also be counterweighted to increase traction between wheels and rails. Counterweights are placed at the front and back of the frame, with a total weight of over 320 kilograms. Most importantly, the locomotive frame must be connected to a towing unit with a trailer for up to four passengers, with a total weight of approximately 680 kg. The analysis includes linear static analysis under normal operational loads to predict stress responses and onward analysis under extreme conditions, anticipating structural failures. Results show that the engineered locomotive frame can withstand normal operational situations while specifying locations subject to fatigue and failure. The research outcomes are important for optimizing the frame design in the future to provide safety, enhance durability, and make the frame comply with regulations. At the end of this study demonstrates how crucial thorough strength analysis is to develop reliable and safe locomotives for railway operations
