Ecology of two sympatric Geckos Cyrtodactylus tigroides and Cyrtodactylus saiyok in Limestone Forest, Kanchanaburi province

Abstract: High diversity of geckos in genus Cyrtodactylus was reported from Thailand, but the knowledge of their biology is still lacking, especially ecology. This study aimed to investigate the distribution, morphological variation and ecology of C. saiyok and C. tigroides in Thailand. The additional populations of these two species were recorded from Suan Pueng, Ratchaburi for C. saiyok and Sangkhla Buri, Kanchanaburi for C. tigroides. This study extended the geographic distribution of these two species from original description. Morphological differences of 96 adults of C. saiyok and 39 adults of C. tigroides from Sai Yok, Kanchanaburi were examined and four characters were different between two species. Two morphological characters of males and females of C. saiyok were different while there was no morphological difference between sexes in C. tigroides. The sexual dimorphism pattern might be forced by many ecological factors i.e. sex competition and fecundity selection. Ecology of C. saiyok and C. tigroides populations were investigated at Sai Yok, Kanchanaburi. The density of C. saiyok in the study site was higher than of C. tigroides. The growth rate of C. saiyok and C. tigroides were higher in juveniles than adults. Breeding season of these two species was between rainy season to early dry season. Microhabitat use parameters were different between C. saiyok and C. tigroides. In addition, adults and juveniles of these geckos were different in the utilization of substrate type and substrate angle. The differences between species, age class or sexes in microhabitat characters might be forced by avoidance to competition, dispersal pattern or thermoregulation. This study provided the basic knowledge on these geckos, which is important for conservation management.
