Synthesis and characterization of novel Zinc based coordination polymers, composite materials and their applications

Abstract: Based on flexible aliphatic carboxylate ligands supplementing by isomerized structure of rigid bipyridyl ligands, five newly Zn(II) coordination polymers, namely [Zn(dpe)(succinate)].1.5H2O (1), [Zn2(citrate)(dpe)(formate)(H2O)].2H2O (2), Zn2(dpe)(glutarate)2(H2O)2 (3), Zn(H2O)(succinate)(tdpe)2 (4), and Zn2(glutarate)2(tdpe)2(H2O)2 (5) (dpe = 1,2- di(4-pyridyl)ethylene, tdpe = trans-1-(2-pyridyl)-2-(4-pyridyl)ethylene)), have been synthesized by appropriate methods. The crystal structures were investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and structurally confirmed by several techniques. The coordination sphere around each Zn(II) center in all complexes exhibits diverse geometries such as tetrahedral (in complex 1), trigonal bipyramidal (in complex 2 and 5), octahedral (in complex 4), and two independent of square pyramidal and tetrahedral (in complex 3) geometries. All of the carboxylate ligands act as bridging ligand with the various coordination mode to build up the main structures especially in complex 2, 4, and 5. All structures of complexes indicated that the coexistence of two ligand types could support the higher dimensionality in the complexes. The complex 1-3 were further used as nitro-aromatic compounds (NACs) and heavy metal ion sensors. They show highly sensitive and selective sensing to 2,4- dinitrophenol (DNP), and Fe(III) ion, respectively based on fluorescence quenching effect. Furthermore, to improve to performance of ZnO, MOF46, and ZIF-8, kinds of Zn-CP, were chosen for studying and covering on the ZnO surface to obtain ZnO@MOF46 and ZnO@ZIF8 heterostructure products, respectively. Two obtained products were using in photodegradation of methylene blue to compare the photocatalytic efficiency with pure ZnO. The result presented ZnO@MOF46 and ZnO@ZIF8 with better efficient photocatalytic performance than of pure ZnO. Onward, the ZnO@ZIF8 was also fabricated as gas sensor to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The sensor revealed that the practice could respond to VOCs at room temperature with highly selective in ammonia, while pure ZnO was unable to respond to all the VOCs at the same practice. The greater efficiencies in both ZnO@MOF46 and ZnO@ZIF8 correspond to the synergistic effect of Zn-CP and ZnO.
