Distribution, delimitation, and diversification of Liverworts in the family Aneuraceae (Metzgeriales, Marchantiophyta)

Abstract: Aneuraceae is the largest family of the simple thalloid liverworts. Despite simple morphological features, this family is well-known for its unique ecology, cryptic diversity, and species-rich lineages. The type genus, Aneura, is reported from Thailand, but its diversity and species boundary are not well understood. In this study, multiple approaches were employed to better understand the distribution, delimitation, and diversification of this group of simple thalloid liverworts. Species distribution modeling identified several important variables for Aneura distribution, including maximum temperature of the warmest month, annual precipitation, and precipitation in the warmest quarter. Potential locations for future exploration were north-to-southwestern and peninsular regions of Thailand, as well as major mountain ranges. Our results demonstrated the possibility of using SDMs in further explorations of the bryophyte diversity in Thailand. From species delimitation analysis, A. pinguis samples formed several paraphyletic clades, confirming previous observations at the global scale. Two putative species was detected among Thai Aneura samples with no clear morphological differentiation between them. The report of A. maxima could result from misidentification and problematic species circumscription. The results highlighted the need to include multiple lines of evidence for the future taxonomic investigation of the group. The time-calibrated phylogeny of Aneuraceae showed that the family originated and in the Lower Carboniferous to Upper Devonian with some variation of estimates due to different schemes of fossil calibration. Lineage diversification was consistent with late burst pattern of speciation with two significant rate shifts in genus Riccardia: one at the crown node of the genus and one at the Neotropical clade. Two speciation rate shifts in Riccardia could be the results of the emergence of asexual reproductive structure in this genus and climate changes in the Neotropics. Ecological conditions at the origin of the family and association with fungi might be associated with the increased diversification in this family.
