Ride comfort analysis comparisons between rubber tire and steel wheel in mass transit system
Abstract:
This research presents a comparative study of Ride Comfort between steel wheel and rubber tire wheel on BTS Skytrain versus Gold Line APM, Bangkok, by using Wertungzahl values (Wz) which were calculated from longitudinal, vertical, and lateral accelerations of the trains. The measured acceleration values were then computed using MATLABTM software resulting in Ride Comfort Index values (Wz) for comparisons according to ISO 2631 standard. There are different perceptions on ride comfort comparison between these two different systems that tire is soft while steel is harder hence lower ride comfort. The result from this research shows differently that steel wheel was sometime, in some section is about 30% better in ride comfort value. The main influences are the differences on surface roughness, softness of the vehicle tire and performance of suspension system. It is very obvious that steel wheel in BTS Line outperforms rubber tire in Gold Line on the Ride Comfort on both vertical and lateral while they are equal on longitudinal Ride Comfort value. This might be because both lines got something in common which is Automatic Train Operation (ATO) by the same supplier.
