Checklist of praying mantis (order Mantodea) and review of the family nanomantidae in Thailand
Abstract:
Praying mantis is a group of insects which having raptorial type foreleg, tegmina forewing and asymmetrical male genitalia structures. They belong to superorder Dictyoptera, order Mantodea. Their important role is predator in natural ecosystem. They consisted of 29 families and at least 2,400 described species worldwide. In Thailand, 13 families, 56 genera and 82 species have been reported. The objectives of this study are providing a checklist of Mantodea, identification key to genera of each family and reviewing family Nanomantidae in Thailand. In this present work, specimens were collected from several localities throughout Thailand, and some of them were loaned from the museums. According to the results, 118 species belong to 67 genera and 13 families were reported. Among them,11 genera and 36 species were reported as new record to Thailand. In the result of reviewing the family Nanomantidae, there were seven species belong to six genera including three new recorded genera and four new recorded species. They were Sinomantis denticulata, Eomantis guttaipennis, Eomantis yunnanensis, Tropidomantis tenera, Pliacanthopus (Malayamantis) bimaculatus, Sceptuchus baehri and one changed taxonomic status, Oligocanthopus yunnanensis comb. nov., it was transferred from genus Miromantis to Oligocanthopus based on differences of morphological structures. The results of this investigation revealed that Miromantis yunnanensis was more conspecific with genus Oligocanthopus. In conclusion, the checklist of Mantodea in Thailand, identification key to genera of each family were created, photographs of specimens were provided, and praying mantis diversity in Thailand and some problematic genera were briefly discussed.
