Study on roles of aquatic environmental factors on changes and successions of potentially toxic cyanobacteria in Ubolratana Reservoir, Khon Kaen Province was carried out under the goal to analyze environmental factors causing the increase of potentially toxic cyanobacteria density and provide an approach for problem prevention and control of potentially toxic cyanobacteria density in reservoir ecosystem. Sampling of phytoplankton and surveys of aquatic environmental factors were conducted 10 times along the river channel of the reservoir (Riverine, Transition, and Lacustrine zones) and littoral zones, including 18 stations along the seasons (from February 2018 to November 2019). The results indicated that the potentially toxic cyanobacteria can be found continuously as dominant species of the reservoir (with densities of 100 - 678,786 cells/L). The densities of potentially toxic cyanobacteria did not change by times but there were differences among the area. In this study, 16 genera of potentially toxic cyanobacteria were found to be capable of producing toxins. Pseudanabaena was dominant in the Riverine zone (with densities of 25 - 11,171 cells/L) and Cylindrospermopsis was dominant in the Lacustrine zone (with densities of 6,300 -310,357 cells/L). The densities of potentially toxic cyanobacteria in this study were in low-risk level that had no impact on recreational water and the water supply (WHO, 2003). The analysis of relationships between total density of potentially toxic cyanobacteria (Dentotal) and environmental factors indicated that the densities were significantly (p< 0.05) influenced by water volume (V;106m 3 ) as Dentotal = -1.5 V2 + 1043.6 V (r = 0.737). The densities of the river channel (Denriver channel) were significantly (p < 0.05) influenced by water depth (D; m) as Denriver channel = - 9926.7 D2 + 72053.0 D (r = 0.506). The densities of the Riverine zone (DenRiverine) and the Transition zone (DenTransition) were significantly (p < 0.05) influenced by water temperature (T; ° C) as DenRiverine=42.2 T2 1112.6 T (r = 0.553) and DenTransition = 626.0 T2 14571.0 T (r = 0.551), respectively. Study on the role of environmental factors on the dominant species of potentially toxic cyanobacteria indicated that Cylindrospermopsis densities were significantly (p < 0.05) influenced by water volume (r = 0.563), water temperature (r = 0.393), inflow (r = 0.369) and N:P ratio (r = 0.697). Psudanabaena densities were significantly (p < 0.05) influenced by water volume (r = 0.504), ammonium (r = 0.486), total suspended solids (r = 0.380) and inflow (r = 0.519). In the overall views, the water volume was found to be the major factor stimulating the increase of potentially toxic cyanobacteria among several groups of phytoplankton. Therefore, appropriate management of water volume may control the growth of potentially toxic cyanobacteria and further contribute to maintain biodiversity balance of primary producers in the reservoir ecosystem.
