Cultivation method for producing Ming Aralia (Polyscias fruticosa (L.) Harms) under saline conditions
Abstract:
Polyscias fruticosa (L.) Harms is a traditional medicinal plant widely used in treatment of ischema and inflamation in Southeast Asia region. Salinity stress has negative impact on plant growth and development, especially active ingredient. Application of biochar could alleviate the severity problem. This research aimed to find out the optimal growing medium component for Ming Aralia (Polyscias fruticosa (L.) Harms) production to produce active compounds under saline conditions. A pot experiment has been conducted from June to December 2019 in 2-month-old plants following completed random designed (CRD) divided into two experiments. First experiment including 12 treatments which is non biochar non saline (NBNS), non biochar moderate saline (NBMD), non biochar severity 1 (NBS1), non biochar severity 2 (NBS2), 25% biochar non saline (25NS), 25% biochar moderate saline (25MD), 25% biochar severity 1 (25S1), 25% biochar severity 2 (25S2), 50% biohar non saline (50S1), 50% biochar moderate (50MD), 50% biochar severity 1 (50S1), 50% biochar severity 2 (50S2) with 8 replications. The second experiment, treatment including non paclobutrazol non saline (NPNS), non paclobutrazol moderate saline (NPMD), non paclobutrazol severity 1 (NPS1), 25ppm paclobutrazol non saline (25NS), 25 ppm paclobutrazol moderate saline (25MD), 25 ppm paclobutrazol severity 1 (25S1), 50 ppm paclobutrazol non saline (50NS), 50 ppm paclobutrazol moderate saline (50MD), 50 ppm paclobutrazol severity 1 (50S1). Results showed that increasing in salinity from non saline to severity 2 has significantly reduced plant height, plant width, LAI and leaves and root fresh weight and dry weight. The components of 25% biochar and 75% coco coir with 300g compost was the best cultivation method for producing Ming Aralia (Polyscias fruticosa (L.) Harms) to promote active compounds under saline conditions. For growing Ming Aralia in normal condition (EC around 0.33 dS.m-1 ) the component of 25% biochar and 75% coco coir with 300g compost promoted plant growths and plant yield. In comparison, the component of 50% biochar and 50% coco coir with 300g compost promoted active compounds.
